Marble vs. Granite: What is the Difference?

Marble vs. Granite: What is the Difference?

Are you wondering what the difference between marble and granite is? They’re both beautiful and highly sought after surfacing materials, but it’s important to know the pros and cons of these surfaces before purchasing for your home.

Marble typically has veining throughout the stone, while granite has a fleck-like granular appearance. Marble is a type of calcareous stone and is made of calcium carbonate. It can be sensitive to acidic foods and drinks like vinegar, wine, tomatoes, and requires specific cleaning procedures. Granite, on the other hand, is composed of quartz-like particles. It tends to be slightly more durable than marble and tends to be easier to clean.

Now that you have a basic understanding of the two stones, which one should you choose for your countertops? It’s important to pick a stone you aesthetically prefer, and a stone you are able to maintain.

Both marble and granite are natural and quarried stones from the earth, and are hard, heavy and relatively heat-proof. They both come in a wide variety of colors and patterns, and they both require sealing every so often.

Marble and granite do possess different properties though. The biggest difference between marble and granite is their porosity. Typically, marble is softer and more porous than granite is, although there are some exceptions. Granite is more resistant to abrasion, staining, and discoloration, and is actually the strongest of all the stones.

Marble and granite make beautiful countertops, backsplashes, and more. They’re both special stones that will transform your home into a unique and inviting space.

Companies like MSI Q Quartz, Silestone, Cambria, and Caesarstone manufacture beautifully engineered stones.

There is no doubt that marble has a better appeal but I’d prefer granite because it takes a little maintenance and easier to clean.
